Dr Anthea Mowatt
Born and raised in Newcastle, Anthea Mary Mowatt (née Wright: born 1958) graduated MBChB (1982) from the University of Aberdeen. She worked as an Associate Specialist in Anaesthesia and as a chronic pain specialist at the Pilgrim Hospital, Lincolnshire. She has been at the forefront of championing Staff Grade, Associate Specialist and Speciality (SAS) doctors, through her workplace, the Royal College of Anaesthetists (RCoA) and the Association of Anaesthetists of Great Britain and Ireland (AAGBI). She has also had an active role in local, regional and national medical politics, spending more than twenty years at the heart of the British Medical Association, culminating as Chair of its Representative Body between 2016–19. This role involved leadership in the spheres of policy, equality and inclusion, education and training, and representation of doctors on numerous advisory groups to government, regulators, patients and international bodies, including the World Medical Association.
Mowatt is an experienced educator and attained a Masters in Medical Education from Dundee University in 2013. She is passionate about appraisal, and the benefits for both patients and doctors, having been an active appraiser since 2003 and taught on appraisal courses. She has advised the GMC on appraisal and revalidation, contributing to their independent Review of Revalidation, which was published in January 2017.
Mowatt has lectured nationally on appraisal, job planning and SAS issues. She has co-authored many reports and handbooks on these subjects. She has been, and continues to be, a strong advocate for gender equality and strengthening the role of women in medicine.
