Dr Mohamed Sorie Forna

Died 19 July 1975

After obtaining a scholarship to study at the University of Aberdeen, Dr Forna returned to Sierra Leone. Many in the independent country hoped he could promote health and education for all. He entered politics and was Minister of Finance in the All People’s Congress from 1968 to 1970.

After he helped to launch the opposition United Democratic Party, he was executed for alleged treason. His daughter, Aminatta Forna investigated the circumstances of her father’s execution. Her vindication is published in “The Devil That Danced on the Water” (2002) Harper Collins (UK)
